byPhil Cloud now speaks EU: one switch, honest labels
The optional hosted service can now send your requests only to EU endpoints, and the model picker tells you which models are from an EU company and which just run in an EU region.
The short answer. If you use byPhil Cloud, you can now turn on Prefer EU servers. Requests then go only to EU endpoints of the model provider, with no fallback elsewhere. The model picker marks every model as EU company or EU servers, and there are one-click Auto presets per provider. It is a convenience with an EU option, not a claim that the service is fully sovereign. This post explains the difference.
What changed
byPhil Cloud is the optional hosted way to use AI Summary Helper: it is included in your byPhil account, so you need no API key. Until now you picked a model and the routing was whatever was cheapest and fastest. Now the model picker has an EU mode and a clearer layout:
- One switch. With Prefer EU servers on, requests are pinned to EU endpoints of the model provider. If a model has no EU route, the request is not quietly sent somewhere else.
- Auto presets. Auto, Auto · Mistral, Auto · Google, Auto · DeepSeek, Auto · Anthropic and Auto · OpenAI choose a suitable model for you. With the EU switch on, they only pick models that have an EU route.
- Two kinds of badge. EU company means the provider is based in Europe (Mistral, in Paris). EU servers means a company elsewhere runs the model in an EU region.
- Search and recents. Your recently used models sit at the top, and a search box finds any cloud model. Models without an EU route stay selectable, but they are marked, so you never switch by accident.
The picker sits in the same place as the other two ways to reach a model, your own key and a local Ollama model, so changing your mind takes one click (how the three compare).
EU company and EU servers are not the same thing
This is the part most product pages blur. A model can be physically in Europe and still belong to a company under US law. The US CLOUD Act lets US authorities require US-based providers to hand over data they control, wherever it is stored; how that squares with the GDPR is disputed (the legal background, with sources). So we label the two cases separately, and you decide which one matters for what you read.
- EU company: subject to EU and national law. Good if jurisdiction is your concern.
- EU servers: your text stays in the EU while it is processed. Good if the data location is your concern, and it lets you use stronger models that are not European.
Neither is a guarantee. Providers, partnerships and investors change, so check the provider’s current terms.
What this does not do
Being clear about the limits matters more than a tidy story:
- The hosted service runs its server and its database at IONOS in Germany. Your text then goes on to the model provider through OpenRouter, a US company. The EU switch pins where the model runs. It does not change who the companies are.
- If you need the strongest setup, use your own key with a provider you trust, or a local model with Ollama, where the page text never leaves your computer.
- Models are not equal. European models are a reasonable choice for everyday reading, but if you need the best available quality, a US model with EU routing may do the job better. That trade-off is yours to make, which is the point of the picker.
Why we built it this way
Sovereignty is not about owning the best model. Models improve and change owners, prices and terms. What protects you is being able to switch: from one model to another, from the cloud to your own key, from your own key to a local model, without losing your library or relearning the tool. Your articles, summaries and highlights stay on your device in any case (privacy policy); the picker only decides who reads the text of the page you ask about.
So the EU mode is one more rung on that ladder, not a destination. It makes the lowest-effort option, no key and no setup, a little more careful about where your text goes.
How to turn it on

Questions people ask
Do I need an API key for byPhil Cloud?
No. It is included in your byPhil account. If you prefer, you can still use your own key or a local model instead.
Is byPhil Cloud the sovereign choice?
No, and we do not describe it that way. It runs in Germany but reaches models through OpenRouter, a US company. For the most control, use your own key or a local model.
What happens if a model has no EU route?
It stays selectable but is marked. With the EU switch on, Auto never picks it and requests are not rerouted outside the EU.
Which should I choose, EU company or EU servers?
Choose an EU company if jurisdiction matters most to you. Choose EU servers if you want the data to stay in the EU but need a stronger model.
